Can you lose weight on the Cookie diet? | Print |  E-mail

The Cookie diet is the latest diet craze to hit Hollywood. Madonna's husband Guy Ritchie did it and it was recently mentioned  on the tv series Lipstick Jungle. So what is the Cookie Diet and can you lose weight with it?

First a bit of Cookie Diet background:

The Cookie Diet was invented by Dr. Sanford Siegal, who started as a medical practitioner in 1957 dealing with patients that   needed help in many ways. Dr. Siegal realized how overweight many of his patients were and how being overweight led to other health problems. He decided he wanted to help them lose the weight and started treating patients specifically for obesity issues using a combination of low calorie diets, exercise and appetite suppressant medications. He also studied the effects of high fiber diets and wrote a book detailing his findings in 1975 called Dr. Siegal’s Natural Fiber Permanent Weight Loss Diet.

Dr. Siegal started to realize that hunger is the reason why many of diets fail and after studying food & food combinations,  he discovered  that combining certain food proteins called amino acids, produces foods that actively control hunger. He made a formula with  the combined amino acids, shaping it in the form of a cookie. Hence the cookie diet was born. Dr. Siegal also  created shakes and soup with the same hunger-controlling qualities.

Some companies tried to copy the Cookie Diet succes and created similar products. One woman's magazine even featured a  recipe for "thyroid-boosting diet cookies". This recipe was loaded with sugar, eggs, oats, Chex cereal, and other high-fat,  high starch, high-sugar ingredients, and according to Dr. Siegal, had nothing to do with his original cookie recipe.

How does the Cookie Diet work?

The cookie diet is actualy a low calorie plan. The cookies are made of whole wheat flour, oats, bran, and rice, contain 90 calories each and are available in the flavors chocolate, raisin or coconut. The cookies can not be bought in the supermarket; they're only available in Dr. Siegals Weight loss clinics.

You eat 6 cookies a day preferably every 2 hours and have a dinner with six ounces of protein, like turkey, chicken, seafood, or other types of fish and one cup of vegetables. Eight glasses of water are recommended and you also need to take vitamins, so that your body gets al the necessairy nutrients to stay healthy. Your total calorie  consumption is around 800 calories a day.

What are the pros & cons of the Cookie Diet?

Among the pros of the cookie diet are:
- You do lose weight, because you're only consuming around 800 calories a day.
- You can lose weight fast. People on the diet report a weightloss of up to 15 pounds a month.
- The cookies leave you feeling fuller for longer and eating 1 cookie every 2 hours will make sure you don't get any cravings

The cons?
- The recommended amount  of vegetables and fruit is 5-9 servings a day. On the Cookie Diet you only get to eat 1 cup of  vegetables, which is just one serving.
- The cookies themselves do not taste that great. Even Dr. Siegal admits this.
- When you get off the Cookie Diet and go back to your old dieting ways, you'll probably regain the weight you lost and then some.
- According to some critics, consuming 800 calories does not provide you with the necessairy nutrients to stay. Hence the recommendation to take a vitamin supplement.
- The Cookie diet is not recommended as a long term diet, certainly not without any medical supervision.

The Cookie diet can be effective in terms of losing weight fast and minus the hunger pangs, but always consult your doctor first before starting any diet program. You also need to carefully consider how your going to maintain your weightloss, once you have reached your goal weight. You don't want to be eating the cookies for the rest of your life, do you?
